I highlighted the basic questions in RED.
I'm going to go look at a Baja someone has for sale with a blown engine. The body looks fantastic from the pictures but I will make sure the body is solid in person. The owner said the engine overheated and the main bearings and crankshaft journals are bad as he tore the engine apart.
I'm in the used Subaru market again because just the other day I went to jack up my Forester and the jack went thru the body. I found that on both sides in the back the sills are completely rotted through, close to the frame rails even. The rot is so bad I don't feel the car is going to be safe for much longer which is no good with having two little kids. That being said I have a donor car now.
I recently replaced the engine in the Forester and it has many other parts I'll either sell or use for my Impreza. Anyway the seller of the Baja is asking around 2,500$. People are telling me to try to get it for a lot less then 2k$. Now I don't know if I should push that low but then I'm being told it could have a load of problems. However I'm thinking if the body is good what other problems could I really expect that I wouldn't notice while looking at it? Also if the transmission is bad can't I just swap out the Forester's transmission to the Baja? I'm pretty sure I'll have to swap the rear diff as well but will all the axles hook up or are they different? Would you pay this price for a Baja with a blown engine when you have a donor car with good parts?
So far out of looking for used Subaru's that are within my price range this Baja seems to be the best deal even though it's not currently running. Any Subaru under 3k$ that I'm finding seems to be a rust bucket or an older model I don't want. I know not all parts of the Forester are interchangeable like suspension, tires, brakes, etc but I feel the drive line is where the money is no?
Thanks for the help ahead of time!
